The Application System/400 (AS/400), now known as System
i, is an IBM minicomputer first produced in 1988 and renamed
to the eServer iSeries in 2000 and System
i in 2006. It is an object-based system with an integrated
DB2 relational database embedded into the operating system and hardware.
The AS/400 and its successors survive because their instruction set,
TIMI (Technology Independent Machine Interface) allows the operating
system and application programs to take advantage of advances in hardware
and software without recompilation.
Compsoft has been involved a number of times in linking up to AS/400
systems and creating new front-end interfaces for legacy applications. To
accomplish this, an ADO.NET data provider for AS/400 is used, such as
that from DataDirect or Ritmo.
This has enabled Compsoft to help companies to continue to get value
out of expensive historical investments whilst also providing the interfaces
and functionality expected from today’s latest systems.
