Some 20 years after its implementation, Compsoft is asked to resolve the first issue experienced with one customer's Delta database application; tweak the VAT rate.
Compsoft was born in the days of DOS, creating and publishing a product called Delta; a rapid application development tool that enabled programmers to quickly and simply create data management solutions. Delta version five, marketed as ‘Delta V’, was released in 1988 and experienced significant success becoming the IT system supporting many corporate, financial and small businesses well in to the 1990s.
Times changed with the growth of Microsoft’s Windows platform and Compsoft evolved, creating the Equinox developer tool, gradually leaving the DOS applications behind. Delta V was no longer sold during the early 90s.
Jump forward to December 2008.
To provide some financial relief to businesses, the government implements a cut in VAT. Businesses across the country need to update their systems to make the appropriate adjustments. It was at this time that Compsoft received a telephone call from West Sussex: a roofing contractor needed to get in to his computer system to change the VAT rate for invoicing and accounting purposes. Mr Roy Gardner, a self employed tradesman, had invested in a Delta 4 application, and upgraded to Delta V in 1988, to manage his business. For 20 years his application had handled quotes, invoices, purchases and reports for the accountants. In 20 years, since the upgrade, Mr Gardner had not experienced a single problem! With 6 months remaining prior to his retirement, Mr Gardner needed to adjust the VAT rate and, with the assistance of the internet, found Compsoft.
Although Compsoft de-supported Delta well over a decade ago, it still has staff with the ability to use Delta applications and was able to provide the changes needed by Mr Gardner. During the short session at Compsoft, Mr Gardner expressed his satisfaction with the application that “is the business!”
“It has everything in it; quotes, invoices and supplier information. It’s all there. It is so simple to use and very effective”.
Compsoft is proud of what Delta achieved during its time and, it appears, continues to do.
